Cambridge Life

Cambridge is full of fantastic restaurants, bars, pubs, and cafes; ranging from upmarket and quite pricey to cheap and cheerful. Here are some of our favourites for you to check out at your leisure.

Eating and Drinking in Cambridge

Near Newnham

Rice Boat - Delicious south indian food, relatively expensive (main plus side plus drink will be about 18 pounds) but absolutely worth it for a treat. Great vegetarian options. Can order by phone and takeaway if you like.

Sala Thong - Favourite thai place in Cambridge, I’m sure they must have multiple Newnhamites a day in there! Similarly priced to Rice Boat, lots of veggie options, can eat in or order ahead and pick up a takeaway.

The Red Bull - Simple pub near Whitstead grad house. Does great pizza, with a two for one on any main on a Monday (best to book for Monday eve or turn up early, very popular!) Quite standard pricing for drinks for Cambridge - a pint might be about 4 quid.

The Granta -Beautiful pub on the river near Newnham, very busy outdoor area in the summer. Does medium upmarket pub food, mains will cost 8-12 pounds. Nice burgers.

Around Cambridge

Seven Days - Fantastic szechaun food, white fish in oil with peppercorns is a must (if you can handle the spice!) Very popular, to come on a weekend evening I recommend to book in advance.

Nando’s - a popular chain of peri-peri style chicken restaurants around the UK. Cheap, delicious food with lots of options and a casual atmosphere. Vegetarian options also good here!

Zhonghua’s Traditional Snacks - Fantastic dumplings near the Grafton centre (5 minutes walk from Cambridge town centre proper). Favourites are the prawn dumplings, and the hot and sour vermicelli in soup

La Margherita -Upscale independent italian food. Delicious pizza, extensive wine list, lots of traditional italian dishes done well. Medium expensive.

The Pint Shop -Awesome range of beers and gins. Bar snacks are proper and delicious, try the homemade scotch egg. Fairly expensive, a pint can be up to 7 quid, but there are cheaper options available too.

Pho - Chain of restaurants in the UK specialising in pho, a vietnamese noodle soup. If you are a real pho aficionado then you feel like the difference between this place and a more authentic restaurant, but unfortunately Cambridge just doesn’t have that much vietnamese food! It is very popular and pretty good, relatively cheap. Makes a good lunch if you are having lunch in town and have some money to spend.

Cambridge Market -Cambridge is super lucky in that we have a market every single day in the market square, selling a whole range of vegetables, cheese, bread, carpets, books, anything you can imagine. There are also a lot of food traders here, with examples from all over the world. I recommend the Thai Van, the arepa stall, the greek kebab stall, the jianbiang stall, and many others!
